Eurecat takes part in a cognitive digital twin for probiotics manufacturing

Eurecat, together with Connecthink, is taking part in developing a cognitive digital twin that will be implemented at EMLIFE Biotics' production plant to digitalise operational knowledge and support workers in the manufacturing of liquid probiotics.

The PROBIO-AI project applies artificial intelligence to digitalise knowledge currently scattered across manual protocols and workers' tacit expertise, aiming to guide staff through microbiological and physicochemical tests and strengthen traceability and food safety.

Lluís Surroca, head of the Digital Transformation Line at Eurecat's Consultancy Department, explains that the centre validates the result indicators and leads the governance to ensure the final decision always rests with people.

The solution is built on GenInContext, Connecthink's framework for Context Engineering and Knowledge Harness. According to Laura Arribas, director of Eurecat's Consultancy Department, the goal is to cut operational information access time by up to 60%, increase productivity by 30 to 40% and achieve 95% traceability in the production process.

The tool also facilitates onboarding of new staff and allows logistics and packaging workers to transition into production roles. Jordi Estiu, business developer at Eurecat's Base Industry and Capital Goods Market, notes that the model can be replicated in other sectors with complex processes and traceability needs.

The project, with a total budget of over €200,000, is one of twelve experiments co-funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, as part of the second WASABI open call.
