The technology center Eurecat, a Catalonia.health member, has incorporated a new technology called Olink® that analyzes up to 92 proteins simultaneously and accelerates the obtaining of results in advanced analysis of biological samples for the development of new products and services in sectors such as health, biotechnology, nutrition, and food.
Applications in Health and Biotechnology
This new equipment "enables companies to access high-precision protein determination studies that are more complete, reliable, and cost-effective, from samples of just a few microliters, with relevant applications in fields such as immunology, oncology, neurology, as well as in the biotechnology, nutrition, and food sectors," explains researcher Manuel Garcia from the Nutrition and Health Unit.
In the health field, this technology enables the determination of proteins with potential biomarker value associated with diseases or pathological states, to evaluate tissue inflammatory processes, the expression of tumor markers, and other proteins linked to neurodegenerative processes, cardiovascular and metabolic alterations. Additionally, it facilitates comparative analysis between control biological samples and samples exposed to toxic agents.
Fast and Precise Identification
The Olink® technology equipment, from Thermo Scientific, facilitates the identification and quantification of a wide range of proteins in a matter of hours, significantly improving the ability to analyze samples in which the profile and protein content are highly important data, through a simple procedure based on the combined use of antibodies and DNA sequences.
As Sara Gómez, director of Eurecat's Nutrition and Health Unit, notes, "with the incorporation of this platform, Eurecat's capacity and that of its specialized laboratories is strengthened to offer advanced solutions to the business community, as well as to support research, development, and innovation projects."
This technology adds to Eurecat's capabilities in life and health sciences and technologies, a field of knowledge that converges to respond to complex challenges facing companies and society, together with digital technologies, cyber-physical systems, materials and manufacturing processes, and environmental technologies.
