Eurecat and the Catalan Institute of Oncology promote a pilot study using artificial intelligence to prevent cancer

Comunicació,

The technology centre Eurecat, a member of Catalonia.health, and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) have launched a pilot test of a digital platform based on artificial intelligence aimed at promoting healthy habits and emotional management in order to contribute to primary cancer prevention. The initiative is part of the European project iBeChange, coordinated by the European Institute of Oncology (IEO).

The platform uses artificial intelligence techniques and reinforcement learning algorithms to provide personalised support and recommendations to users, in line with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). The goal is to facilitate sustainable behavioural changes over time by addressing psychosocial and lifestyle risk factors associated with cancer incidence.

The pilot study will run for six months and will involve 210 volunteers in Spain, Italy and Romania. During this period, the feasibility, usability and acceptance of the platform as a support tool for cancer prevention will be assessed. The system integrates data from app usage, questionnaires and smart devices to adapt recommendations to each user’s needs and context.

Through its Digital Health unit, Eurecat acts as the technical coordinator of the project and is responsible for the development and deployment of the digital platform. The ICO, in turn, is responsible for clinical coordination and participant recruitment. The iBeChange project is funded by the Horizon Europe programme, under the Mission Cancer initiative, and contributes to the objectives of the European Cancer Plan.
