Last May 9, for the European Day, Catalonia.health was present at the institutional event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the accession of Catalonia and Spain to the European Union. Representing the presidency of the association and its associates, the vice-president of Catalonia.health, Pau Turón, attended.
The event, held in the auditorium of the Design Museum - Dhub in Barcelona (Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes) from 10.30 am, brought together representatives of the country's main public and private institutions. It was chaired by the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and had the participation of the Barcelona City Council, the Provincial Council of Barcelona, the Representation of the European Commission and the Office of the European Parliament in Barcelona, among others. The former president of the European Commission and former Italian prime minister, Romano Prodi, participated as guest of honor.
During his speech, President Illa opted for a thorough rethinking of the European Union through federalism, reaffirming European founding values, and stressed that Europeanism has always been a fundamental feature of political Catalanism. For his part, the Minister of European Union and External Action, Jaume Duch, warned that the EU is faced with two options: evolve to face the challenges of a very different world, or embark on the path of irrelevance, endangering everything that has been achieved in recent decades.
The event included a lecture by Romano Prodi, a round table on the Erasmus program with young participants, and culminated in the unfurling of a giant European flag in Santiago Pey Square, accompanied by the interpretation of the Anthem of the European Union—with lyrics in Catalan by Joan Maragall—by the Corelli, Vivaldi and Espiga Choirs. It should also be noted that Barcelona has been designated European Capital of Local Trade 2026, a recognition that was highlighted during the day.
Catalonia.health's presence at this event reflects the association's commitment to European values and the role that the Catalan health sector plays in building a more cohesive and advanced Europe.
