Eurecat and SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital design a social robot to help children and adolescents with palliative needs at home

The technology centre Eurecat, a member of CATALONIA.HEALTH, together with the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, have designed a social desktop robot, called Robot Jana, to help palliative pediatric patients at home, as it allows remote monitoring of the patient's symptoms and facilitates communication between professionals and the family.

The Jana robot consists of a structure created with 3D printing and a tablet connected to a medical application through which caregivers interact. It has been designed to take into account the desktop robots available on the market, with the aim of creating an easily accessible and scalable solution in the field of health.

The interaction between robots and patients has been improved “providing the robot with facial expressions and body movements in such a way that it allows to trigger different microbehaviours in specific situations, in coordination with the medical application and the dialogue with the user”, says Magí Dalmau, head of the Cognitive Robotics Line of the Eurecat Robotics and Automation Unit.

Currently, it is being tested for six months in a pilot clinical study led by SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, with ten robots installed in the homes of pediatric patients with severe neurological diseases and palliative care, to assess the usability and satisfaction of families and care professionals of the telemonitoring solutions developed.
