BrainMapp, a new UAB and CVC spin-off to improve brain mapping during tumour surgery

BrainMapp Software Solutions has been set up as a spin-off of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), a Catalonia.health member, and the Computer Vision Center (CVC), to bring to market a digital tool that helps neurosurgery teams identify the brain areas to preserve during tumour removal.

The technology was developed in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Department of Bellvitge University Hospital and the Cognition and Brain Plasticity research group at IDIBELL, also a Catalonia.health member. During surgery, the platform records, organises and displays in real time the team’s stimulations, the patient’s responses and test results, and integrates them with prior imaging such as MRI scans.

“One of the great challenges is removing as much of the tumour as possible while preserving essential functions for the patient,” explains Dr. Andreu Gabarrós, head of Neurosurgery at Bellvitge.

BrainMapp is used as a complementary support tool, under the direct supervision of the medical team, and has so far been applied in 31 procedures, 19 of them at Bellvitge. The first version focuses on superficial brain areas, and the team is working to extend it to deeper regions.

With the company now established, BrainMapp is entering a new stage focused on validating its technology and moving towards commercialisation and wider clinical adoption.
