Professionals from Santa Creu and Sant Pau Hospital have shared different clinical needs identified in their day-to-day care with start-ups and companies from CataloniaBio  & HealthTech, to generate synergies and develop joint solutions that reach healthcare professionals. and patients as soon as possible. The meeting took place in the Sala Antic Convent, in the Hospital de Sant Pau, within framework of the Hospital Connection event, on November 30. The conference is an initiative of the Innovation  Working Group of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, this time in collaboration with the IIB Sant Pau.

The presentation of the Technology and Innovation Transfer Unit of the Biomedical Research Institute and Hospital de Sant Pau was given by Miriam Ors Riera, head of the Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit IIB Sant Pau. From CataloniaBio & HealthTech the welcome was by Judit Anido, CEO, and Marta  Palicio, Third Vice President and Director of R&D Innovation at Werfen.

Four professionals from Sant Pau presented their challenges to the audience. Josep  Estadella, Coordinator of the Outpatient Gynecology Process at Sant Pau Hospital and ASSIR Guinardó-Sant Pau, identified the difficulty of access to specialized centres for patients with endometriosis, and called for solutions mainly to improve quality of life of patients and to resolve the care overload posed by current solutions. In turn, César Acebes, Biomedical Engineer in the 3D innovation group at Hospital de Sant Pau, with a profile clearly complementary to that of strictly healthcare, posed challenges related to patients at risk of coronary heart disease and aortic pathology.

The Chief of Dietetics and Nutrition at Sant Pau, Gemma Navarro, focused her challenges on the lack of adherence and non-compliance with diets in patients with specific dietary needs, inside and outside the hospital. She outlined some of the current solutions, identifying shortcomings and areas for improvement, and finally focusing on patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia. For the last of the challenges, Alexandre Gironell, Doctor in the Department of Neurology at the Hospital de Sant Pau, posed challenges and possible solutions based on new technologies around the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with tremor, and neurophysiological studies in movement disorders.

In the conclusions, Laia Arnal, member of the board of CataloniaBio  & HealthTech and director of Business Development at the Vall d’Hebron Research  Institute (VHIR), congratulated the professionals for presenting the challenges. “These are solutions that involve, above all, innovation in the  processes. Some have low costs and development, some are more complex and have higher cost, and you have to do it with health professionals from specialized companies. " Arnal recalled that innovation is not just about research, that these improvements in digital processes and solutions "are  also innovation".
