For the Capital Radio Investment Day, journalist Miguel Sanmartín interviewed CataloniaBio & HealthTech President Judit Anido to learn about the state of the healthcare and life sciences sector in Catalonia.

Anido explained that, although this has been a difficult year, it has also confirmed this sector’s strategic role not only in tackling Covid-19 but also in any future healthcare challenges and for a knowledge and innovation-based society.

According to indicators in the BioRegion of Catalonia Life Sciences and Healthcare Outlook 2020, the healthcare sector has shown strong and sustained growth over the past 10 years (business creation, investment, scientific production, etc.). Although it is a highly regulated sector with long investment cycles, it also has a high impact on society and the economy. More and more investors are committing to biomedical start-ups. In Catalonia, there are already eight specialised funds with €700 million to invest.

The president of CataloniaBio & HealthTech also highlighted that we have the opportunity now to structure the European recovery funds Spain will receive to support the healthcare industry and create forward-looking policies. In this regard, CataloniaBio & HealthTech’s role is to keep lines of communication open with the Government and administrations so that these policies are aligned with the needs and potential of the business sphere.
