Horizon Europe, the European Union’s framework programme for investment in research and innovation for 2021-2027, has kicked off after being published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) on 12 May 2021.

Horizon Europe has a total budget of €95.5 billion, 30% more than its predecessor Horizon 2020.

The new programme has three main pillars: 

• Excellent science: reinforcing and expanding the excellence of the EU’s scientific foundation through the European Research Council (ERC), Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions and research infrastructures.
  
  
• Global challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness: promoting key solutions and technology to support EU policies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through six clusters:
  
  
  • Health
  • Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
  • Civil Security for Society
  • Digital, Industrial and Space
  • Climate, Energy and Mobility
  • Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
    
    
• Innovative Europe: stimulating cutting-edge innovations and market creators and ecosystems that foster innovation through the European Innovation Council (EIC), European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and connections among regional and national stakeholders.

Regulation (EU) 2021/695 establishes the rules for participation and dissemination and it applies retroactively from 1 January of this year.

This budget, along with the Next Generation EU temporary recovery instrument, is the largest stimulus package ever funded through the EU, with a total of €1.8 trillion.

Horizon Europe for companies in Catalonia

The Ministry of Science and Innovation has launched a Spanish website on Horizon Europe with updated information and CDTI a website with presentations and webinars.

Additionally, to explain the various calls that will be opening soon, ACCIÓ is hosting Horizon Europe Week, from 31 May to 4 June, with a webinars specifically about the EIC Accelerator and the Horizon Europe for health sector.
