Signed the binding agreement for the construction of the new health campus of the Hospital Clínic Barcelona

Carla Archs,

This Monday, at the Palau de la Generalitat, the binding agreement was signed between the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Hospital Clínic Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the City Councils of Barcelona, Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat, and the Diputació de Barcelona, for the construction of the new health campus of the Hospital Clínic. The Hospital Clínic Barcelona and the University of Barcelona are members of CataloniaBio & HealthTech.

The agreement establishes a joint framework of collaboration among all institutions to promote urban development for the construction of the new campus serving the sports of the University of Barcelona. The expansion of the Hospital Clínic and the transfer of the Faculty of Medicine of the UB aims to increase their potential, such as deepening their health, university, scientific and technological excellence. There is also a commitment to sustainability from an environmental, economic and social perspective.

The Hospital Clínic Barcelona is a reference hospital facility, with top-level clinical capacity and high technology. It has a strong vocation for university education and scientific research. It is one of the most important healthcare complexes in the country and in Europe. This new campus, which meets the needs for growth, service improvement, and excellence, will include the expansion of the Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona, and other healthcare, university, scientific and research facilities that are agreed upon.

The future construction of the new facilities will allow maintaining hospital services at the Villarroel, Plató and la Maternitat sites to meet the needs of the reference population. The current location of the hospital in the Eixample will include healthcare services, teaching, research, and innovation to be maintained, as well as new municipal facilities and public space expansion.

Dr. Josep M. Campistol, general director of Clínic Barcelona, values very positively the signature of this binding agreement: "from the beginning all institutions have been aligned to carry out this project that covers a priority citizen need and now all machinery is being put in place to make it a reality." "From the Hospital, we are already working on the functional plan to define the uses of the new facilities that will constitute a new hub that must continue to position Catalonia at the forefront in the field of health in Europe and in the world," he adds.
