Dr. Manel Esteller, director of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), member of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, has been selected as the top researcher in the field of genetics in Spain in the 2024 edition of the Research.com ranking of the best scientists, a leading academic platform for researchers. He has also obtained the 37th position among the 4,000 best scientists in the world studying genetics.
The ranking only includes the most outstanding scientists with a D-index of at least 40 for academic publications in the field of genetics. This is the third edition of this annual ranking, which aims to give visibility to global scientific leaders and highlight their latest studies. Dr. Esteller was already recognized as the most outstanding researcher in genetics in Spain in the previous edition.
Dr. Esteller's research mainly focuses on the regulation of human genome activity, an area commonly known as "Epigenetics". Dr. Esteller's discoveries in this field have revealed the chemical modifications in DNA, RNA and proteins that characterize human diseases, with a special emphasis on cancer. Dr. Esteller's innovative discoveries have also contributed to the development of new complementary diagnostics and the approval of top-level cancer drugs, such as those targeting DNA methylation and histone modifications.
